Beaver Creek, located outside of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, has diverse biota, i.e., fauna, flora, and funga. The attached manuscript attempts to show some of that biota, often in action. Featured are the Beaver Creek Bears, an amusing and entertaining assortment of black bears that inhibit the woods along Beaver Creek. Also taking center stage are fishers and other wildlife that were filmed in their natural habitat, often interacting with Beaver Creek mushrooms.
Below is a photo of Huey, one of our favorite Beaver Creek Bears (and one of the 2019 Triplets). The photo is from late July, 2024. It was hot and humid at that time, so the ants were very active. When the ants are active, bears go ant hunting, as ants and other insects, such as mites, are bear delicacies. Turning back to the photo, in Huey's mouth is a remnant of a decaying cherry tree that had become ant infested. In 2023, the bears had used that cherry tree as a scenting tree, literally loving it death as they snapped in half, and then ultimately off to a mere stump. In this photo sequence, Huey went a little "ant crazy," and crushed some the cherry tree remnants to bits with his body weight, trying to get to the ants therein.
As always, remember, when it comes to natures, one never knows, unless we go interwald, i.e., into the woods.
July 2024: Huey hunting Ants during Ant Season
For those interested in foraging and mushrooms, our exquisite bride, Hunter, has an online store with various mushroom products - The Mushroom Lover.
We recommend Hunter's Porcini Rub, which is sublime seasoning when cooking or grilling rib eye steaks. And Hunter's children book, Where The Mushrooms Are, is a fun way to get your toddlers interested in nature and everything interwald.
